Will My Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

The short answer: usually, if the hail caused real damage and your policy covers storm damage. Here is how insurers actually decide, and how to give your claim the strongest shot.

How Insurers Actually Decide

Most homeowners policies in Texas cover sudden storm damage, and that includes hail. But the insurer is not asking whether hail fell on your roof. They are asking whether the hail caused functional damage: bruised shingles that lost granules, cracked shingles, dented vents, or anything that shortens the life of the roof or lets water in.

Cosmetic-only damage, like small dents on a metal vent that still work fine, may not qualify under some policies. Wear and tear never qualifies. If your roof was already near the end of its life, the adjuster will say so. This is why an honest roofer matters: we will tell you if the damage is real before you ever call your insurer. Here is what hail damage actually looks like on a Sugar Land roof.

Your Deductible Comes First

Before coverage kicks in, you pay your deductible. Many Texas policies use a percentage deductible for wind and hail, often 1 or 2 percent of the insured value of the home. On a $350,000 home, a 2 percent deductible is $7,000 out of your pocket before the insurer pays a dollar.

Know your number before you file. If the damage is clearly below your deductible, filing a claim does not help you. A free inspection gives you a real damage assessment first, so you can make that call with facts instead of guesses.

Documentation Wins Claims

The strongest claims are the best documented ones. After a hailstorm:

  • Note the date of the storm. Claims tie damage to a specific weather event, so write down when it happened.
  • Photograph everything from the ground. Damaged cars, dented gutters, shredded plants, hailstones next to a coin for scale.
  • Do not wait. Policies have filing deadlines, and damage gets harder to prove months later.
  • Get a professional inspection first. We photograph and chalk-mark every hail hit so there is a clear record of what the storm did. That documentation goes straight into your claim file.

Our step-by-step guide to filing a roof insurance claim in Texas walks through the whole process.

The Adjuster Visit

After you file, the insurer sends an adjuster to inspect the roof. You are allowed to have your roofer there, and you should. We meet adjusters on roofs regularly. We point out the damage we documented, compare notes with what the adjuster finds, and make sure nothing gets overlooked. An adjuster who spends ten minutes on a roof can miss what a roofer who spent an hour found.

If Damage Gets Missed

It happens. If the adjuster's report comes back light, or denies the claim, you have options. A reputable roofer can file a supplement: additional documented damage with photos that asks the insurer to reconsider. Sometimes a reinspection with a different adjuster is the answer. Do not accept a denial as the final word without a second look at the evidence. We help homeowners through supplements and reinspections as part of our insurance-claim help, at no extra charge.

You Choose the Roofer, Not the Insurer

This is the part many homeowners do not know. Your insurance company cannot force you to use their preferred contractor. You choose who does the work. Pick the roofer you trust, the one who documented the damage and showed up for the adjuster visit. Every repair we do carries our 2-year transferable labor warranty, and full replacements carry 5 years.

Hail & Insurance FAQs

Should I call my insurer or a roofer first after hail?

A roofer, and specifically one who will give you an honest assessment. If there is no real damage, you just saved yourself a claim on your record. If there is damage, you walk into the claim with documentation already in hand.

How long do I have to file a hail damage claim?

It depends on your policy, but most give you a year or two from the date of the storm. Sooner is always better: damage is easier to prove and easier to tie to a specific storm when it is fresh.

Will filing a hail claim raise my rates?

Rate decisions are up to your insurer and your state, and hail claims are sometimes treated differently than other claims. We cannot advise you on your rates. What we can do is give you an honest damage assessment so you only file when there is real damage to claim.

What if my roof is old? Will insurance still cover hail damage?

Age alone is not supposed to disqualify a claim for sudden storm damage, and a Texas rule proposed in 2026 would make that explicit. But insurers do factor in the roof's condition. An older roof in good shape with documented damage has a much stronger claim than one that was already failing.
