Step 1: Document Before You Call
Before the insurance company sends anyone, get your own record. Photos of missing shingles, dented vents, hail marks, and any interior leaks, dated if possible. Do not climb on the roof yourself. Our free inspection does this properly: drone photos, a written report, and measurements you can hand to the adjuster.
Step 2: File the Claim
Call your insurer's claims line and report storm damage to the roof. They will open a claim number and assign an adjuster. Note the date of the storm if you know it. Filing promptly matters: policies have deadlines, and waiting months weakens the link between the storm and the damage.
Step 3: The Adjuster Visit
The adjuster inspects the roof and decides what the insurer will pay for, minus your deductible. This is where documentation decides outcomes. Our report gives the adjuster dated photos and specifics instead of relying on memory. We can be on site during the visit to point out damage and answer technical questions.
Step 4: The Estimate and the Check
The insurer issues a scope of work and a payment, usually in two parts: an initial amount, then recoverable depreciation after the work is completed and invoiced. Read the scope carefully. If legitimate damage was missed, it can be supplemented, which is another reason thorough documentation matters from day one.
What to Watch For
- Do not sign anything from a door-knocker before you understand it. Some storm-chaser contracts sign away your claim rights.
- Your deductible is yours. In Texas, a contractor offering to "cover" or "waive" your deductible is a red flag. The deductible is part of your policy, and the insurer prices the claim around it.
- Cosmetic vs. functional. Insurers sometimes classify hail marks as cosmetic and deny them. Dated photos and a professional report are your counter.
- You choose the roofer. The insurer cannot force you to use their preferred contractor. Pick the company you want working on your home.
